Rose Pogonia

Pogonia

 ophioglossoides

The showy Rose Pogonia (Pogonia ophioglossoides) may be found in wet flatwoods and pitcherplant savannas in the eastern United States. One or two pink flowers, which some say have a hint of raspberry fragrance, top a short stem with a single clasping leaf. The similarity of this leaf to that of the Adder’s-Tongue Fern (Ophioglossum sp.) clarifies the mystery of its species name which means resembling a snake’s tongue. Pogonia, Latin for beard, refers to the fringes on the orchid’s lip.
