Primrose-flowered Butterwort

Pinguicula

 primuliflora

The Primrose-flowered Butterwort (Pinguicula primuliflora), a carnivorous plant found only in the Florida Panhandle and adjacent states, often grows with its leaves submerged in flowing creeks. The showy bluish-purple flowers with yellow throats are reminiscent of the primrose which both the common and Latin names describe. Pinguicula means fatty and describes the greasy feeling leaves that secrete mucilage in which small insects get mired. Milk poured over butterwort leaves curdles into a tasty yogurt-like solid. The common name may originate from this practice rather than describe the buttery-feeling leaves.
