Manyflowered Grasspink

Calopogon

 multiflorus

The Manyflowered Grasspink (Calopogon multiflorus) is so named because the orchid can have up to fifteen flowers blooming at the same time. By noon, the blossoms on the foot-high plants are closed. Calopogon means having a beautiful beard, describing the bristles on the orchid’s lip. This fire-dependent orchid can only be found in the blackened soil of very recently burned flatwoods. Under these conditions, one may see hundreds of the plants.

Because of its limited flowering time, this is not easily seen. Read more about our experiences with these orchids In Search of the Manyflowered Grasspoink Orchid.
