The Fringed Pink (Silene catesbaei) is found in just a few Florida and Georgia counties. Its other common name, the Eastern Fringed Catchfly, refers to the sticky glands on the calyx that can ensnare small insects. Someone with an imagination run amok compared the glandular secretions of the sticky flowers to the foam that covered Silenus, a drunken follower of the god Dionysos. This species honors Mark Catesby (1683–1749), an English naturalist, best known for publishing the first account of North America’s flora and fauna.
