Florida Flame Azalea

Rhododendron

 austrinum

The Florida Flame Azalea (Rhododendron austrinum) grows on wooded slopes, usually near streams, in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and north Florida. Described as a southern (austrinum) rose (rhodo) tree (dendron), the large showy orange to peach trumpet flowers bloom on the tall deciduous shrub before or as the leaves emerge. The flowers’ spicy sweet fragrance reveal the shrub’s presence before being seen. Once established in a proper site, it makes an excellent landscape plant that also attracts butterflies.
