Although not common, the spikes of brilliant red blooms of the Cardinalflower (Lobelia cardinalis) cannot be overlooked. They grow in moist areas throughout the eastern United States. They bloom July through October in north and central Florida. The plant’s genus Lobelia honors the Flemish botanist Mathias de l’Obel (1538–1616) while the species name refers to the flowers’ scarlet red color. This is a good addition to a native garden that will attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.
