Cabbage Palm (Palmetto sabal) was a food source for many Floridians who ate (and still eat when available) the newly emerging crown of leaves which do taste like cabbage. Unfortunately, cutting off the top kills the entire palm. Palmetto and Sabal Palm are other common names for this beautiful palm. It still graces the state flag of South Carolina after being on various South Carolina flags since the Revolutionary War.
