The Atamasco Lily (Zephyranthes atamasca), a white flower that turns pink with age, announces spring with its appearance in moist woodlands of the southeastern United States. Its Latin name comes from Zephyr, the Greek god of the west wind that re-awakens nature each spring, and anthos for flower. Atamasco is based on a Native American name, perhaps a Powhatan word meaning stained with red; a Tapehanek word meaning under the grass; or an Algonquian word. This perennial bulb is an excellent addition to a woodland garden.
