Ashe Magnolia

Magnolia

 macrophylla var. ashei

The Ashe Magnolia (Magnolia macrophylla var. ashei) is endemic to the Florida Panhandle. Some consider the Ashe Magnolia a distinct species while others consider it a variety of the Bigleaf Magnolia (M. macrophylla) that is found in other parts of the southeastern United States. The ranges of the two trees do not overlap.

The tree’s eared leaves can be over a yard long! You cannot resist the urge to measure and pose your face or hands against the very large leaves. The large white flowers are equally spectacular.

William Willard Ashe, a forester who also published many new plant species, is fortunate to have the beautiful Ashe Magnolia named in his honor.
