Endemic Species

Stretching his hand up to reach the stars, too often man forgets the flowers at his feet.

Jeremy Bentham

Endemic plants are native plants that are found only within a specific area. The area may be very localized area such as a county or a broader region such as the southeastern United States.

On these pages, a plant is considered endemic if it is found only in the state of  Florida. These species will not be found outside the state of Florida.

Many endemics are also threatened or endangered because of their restriction locations. For example, the Harper’s Beauty, a federally and state endangered species, is found only in two Florida counties.
