The Red-spotted Admiral (Limenitis arthemis astyanax) is found east of the Mississippi from Florida and Texas north to New York and Illinois. Originally known as the Red-spotted Purple, taxonomists have concluded that the butterfly in this range is actually a subspecies of the White Admiral (Limenitis arthemis arthemis); hence the name change to Red-spotted Admiral. The White Admiral is found mostly in Canada. Hybrids exist between the two regions.
