Pinewoods Treefrog

Hyla femoralis

While the Pinewoods Treefrog (Hyla femoralis) can be a light green color, its body can also be tan, gray, or brown. Its face usually has a bandit’s mask. The species name describes distinctive orange spots on the femur, the inner thigh. The choral calls of the frogs in this genus have been compared to the cries made by those looking for Hylas, a beloved companion of Hercules, who was abducted by water nymphs while drawing water from a fountain.
