Candlesnuff Fungus

For those of you who have grown up with candles will agree that Candlesnuff Fungus (Xylaria hypoxylon) does look like burned candle wicks that have been snuffed out. Other descriptive names of Candlesnuff Fungus are Candlestick Fungus and Carbon Antlers. I wish I had known that Candlesnuff Fungus glows in the dark when I took its photographs. The genus name Hypoxylon from hypo for below and xylon for wood refers to its usual habit of growing in decaying wood.
