The Great Horned owl (Bubo virginianus), one of North America’s most common owls, is found in every state of the continental United States. A facial disc of feathers surrounding the eyes directs sound waves to the ears. The bright yellow eyes can only face forward, but it can turn its head 270 degrees left or right. This owl does not build its nest, but usurps nests of other birds, mostly hawks and crows, and occasionally bald eagles.
