The Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charithonia), a tropical butterfly of Central and South America, ranges northward to Florida and Texas. Also known as the Zebra Heliconian, it is Florida’s state butterfly. Unlike most butterflies, the Zebra Longwing can live several months by eating pollen to sustain itself. White caterpillars with black spines feed on several native species of Passionvine (Passiflora spp.).
