Catesby’s Lily (Lilium catesbaei) is a fire-adapted species found throughout the southeastern Untied States, frequently in pitcherplant savannas where, after a fire, you may see several hundred of the two to three-foot tall lilies in bloom. The crimson flower streaked with yellow and spotted with maroon or magenta, the largest of North America’s lilies, is all show and no fragrance. The name honors Mark Catesby (1683-1749), an English naturalist, best known for publishing the first account of North America’s flora and fauna.
