Rose-Rush (Lygodesmia aphylla) is not a gregarious plant, but appears here and there among other plants of flatwoods and scrub of Florida and Georgia. The Latin name, a leafless (aphylla) twiggy (lygos) bundle (desme), perfectly describes the single two-inch pink to lavender flower held aloft by a wispy one to two-foot tall stem that appears leafless. The stem exudes a sticky sap that hardens into a gum chewed by Native Americans.
