American White Waterlily

Nymphaea

 odorata

The American White Waterlily (Nymphaea odorata) is found throughout the United States and Canada. Like the Greek nymphs after which its genus is named, the Waterlily is found in slow-moving streams and ponds. The species name refers to the large three to five inch fragrant flowers which bloom from May through September. Special ribs and air pockets on the undersides of the large round leaves keep the plants afloat. These primitive plants date back 140 million years. Folk tradition says that the root mixed with lemon juice removes freckles.
