Crossvine

Bignonia

 capreolata

Crossvine (Bignonia capreolata), found in forested wetlands of much of the eastern United States, is a beautiful addition to any landscape. In spring, its orange to red trumpet-shaped flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies. After blooming, the flowers form attractive brown pods. The vine is so named because a cross is revealed in the pith of a cut stem’s cross-section. The genus name honors Abbé Jean-Paul Bignon (1662–1743) and the species name capreolata refers to the vine’s tendrils.
